About the Artist
Gabriel's studio is based in Durham, North Carolina USA. His work explores the cultural history of identity, including his own as a Chinese American born and raised in the South, and our human connection to the natural world. Outside of creating artwork for clients and collectors, Gabriel works with Durham's community to showcase and uplift the area's vibrant and diverse art scene by curating/producing events and working as a youth mentor. @gabegets | gabegets.com
SITE HISTORY - Indigenous Tuscahora Indians first inhabited the land and called it "the place of the sweet bay tree." The area later became a trading post known as Shallops Landing, and in 1793 it was chartered as Elizabethtown and then changed to Columbia in 1801. For centuries residents have subsisted on livelihoods such as mercantile trade, milling, county administration, and maritime occupations. Today Columbia attracts visitors with expansive wetlands, woodlands, waterways, wildlife, and history. Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft's campus is an anchor in the renewed downtown area, attracting students, instructors and visitors from across the United States and abroad to learn and explore.
Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft - In June of 1994, the school was established as a private, non-profit educational center that seeks to enrich the lives of those in the local community and beyond by providing opportunities for discovery, creativity, and lifelong learning through the arts. Pocosin Arts has a diverse offering of programs, including public school enrichment, after-school and summer children's programs, weekend and week-long craft workshops, community classes; artist residencies; and participation in local events. Since its inception, Pocosin Arts continues to be a critical cultural resource to Tyrrell county and the surrounding area.
